Health Impacts of Lead Toxicity

Lead Toxicity can cause the following problems:

Enzymes

The function of hundreds of vital metallo-enzymes is impaired by displacement of zinc, copper, manganese, iron and chromium.

Hormones and Glands

Lead inactivates many hormones, particularly thyroxin and reduces the binding rate of protein in the thyroid gland.

Organs, Blood and Body Systems

When lead reduces zinc levels kidney function may be impaired. Lead reduces formation of glycogen from glucose in the liver. Lead increases the destruction rate of red blood cells. Excretion of uric acid is reduced by lead toxicity.

Musculo-Skeletal System

Osteo arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, low back pain and rickets are linked to excess lead levels.

Nervous System

Abnormal brain function, blindness, convulsions, deafness, dyslexia, encephalitis, encephalopathy, epilepsy, fatigue, insomnia, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, Parkinson’s disease and vertigo are associated with lead toxicity.

Cardiovascular System

Arteriosclerosis, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular dysfunction can be aggravated by lead levels.

Digestive System

Abdominal pain, colic, constipation, indigestion, liver dysfunction.

Reproductive System

Lead toxicity effects the reproductive system in many ways: impotency, infertility, diminished libido, menstrual difficulties, miscarriage, sterility, premature births and stillbirths.

Endocrine and Metabolic systems

Adrenal insufficiency, hypopituitarism and hypothyroidism can be linked to excess lead levels.

Excretory system

Nephritis and renal dysfunction.

Dental

Gum disease and tooth decay.

Metabolic dysfunctions

Diabetes, hypoglycemia and impairment of glycogen storage.

Psychological

Anxiety, poor concentration, mental depression, hallucinations, hyperkinesis, impairment of memory, mental retardation, mood swings, bipolar, nightmares, psychotic behavior and schizophrenia.

Miscellaneous Dysfunctions

Anaemia, alopecia, cancer and impaired cell integrity.

Psychiatric Symptoms

Excitability, restlessness, insomnia, nightmares, hallucinations, loss of memory, loss of concentration and depression.
